Bassist Ben Allison, guitarist Steve Cardenas, and saxophonist Ted Nash model their trio after Jimmy Giuffre’s drummerless units of the 1950s and 60s, incorporating elements of blues and folk while also embracing free playing. For their newest album, Tell the Birds I Said Hello—which comes after two records focused on the music of West Side Story and the late-great Carla Bley, respectively—they return to a longstanding figure of fascination for Allison: the underrated pianist-composer Herbie Nichols.
